WHEN TO CALL THE CORONER

  1. ALL TRAUMATIC DEATHS:
    • Motor vehicle accidents (planes, trains & automobiles…bikes, pedestrians, motorcycles too)
    • Shootings
    • Hangings
    • Stabbings
    • Drug overdoses (prescription, over-the-counter, and street drugs)
    • Physical abuse (all kinds, i.e. blunt force injuries, beatings, etc.)
    • Falls

  2. ANY PERSON THAT IS “DOA” OR DIES WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER HOSPITAL ADMISSION.

  3. DEATH OF A PERSON DURING ANY SURGICAL PROCEDURE (INCLUDING HEART CATHETERIZATION, KIDNEY DIALYSIS OR ANY INVASIVE PROCEDURE) OR WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER COMPLETION OF ANY INVASIVE PROCEDURE.

  4. ALL DEATHS OF CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 2 WHO DIE SUDDENLY OR UNEXPECTEDLY OR ARE FOUND DEAD.

  5. ALL INJURIES FROM FALLS WHICH CAUSE OR CONTRIBUTE TO DEATH AND ALL FRACTURES IF PATIENT DIES WITHIN ONE YEAR AND ONE DAY.

  6. ANY PATIENT WHO IS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL FROM ANY STATE INSTITUTION: JAILS, PRISONS, MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES, DCFS, WARDS OF THE STATE IN PRIVATE CARE FACILITIES, CORRECTIONAL CENTERS, ETC., EVEN IF THE DEATH  IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN FROM NATURAL CAUSES.

  7. ALL STILLBORN INFANTS WHERE THERE IS SUSPICION OF ILLEGAL INTERFERENCE.

  8. ANY DEATH WHERE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS CAUSE OR CONTRIBUTE TO DEATH.

  9. ALL DEATHS UNATTENDED BY A LICENSED PHYSICIAN INCLUDING HOSPICE PATIENTS WHO DIE AT HOME.

  10. ALL NURSING HOME DEATHS IF THE PERSON WAS NOT SEEN BY A PHYSICIAN WITHIN THE PAST 72 HOURS.

  11. ANY DEATH WHICH YOU MAY HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT.

  12. ALL BODIES MUST BE SIGNED OUT BY AND CREMATIONS MUST BE CONDUCTED THROUGH A LICENSED FUNERAL DIRECTOR.
