SUMMARY
Supervises groundskeeping personnel and maintains grounds of all County owned buildings.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervises the groundskeeping staff responsible for both routine and extensive groundskeeping activity. Involved with special projects such as landscape planning for new facilities or co-ordinating office moves.
Plans, assigns and inspects the activities of subordinates responsible for mowing and trimming County owned lawns, planting grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
Supervises the trimming and pruning of trees and shrubs; applying herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers; litter and leaf removal and assisting with minor preventive maintenance and remodeling functions. Performs snow and ice removal from parking lots and sidewalks.
Determines project priorities and schedules groundskeeping activities.
Ensures that preventive maintenance procedures are carried out on a scheduled basis and completes maintenance records for all equipment.
Recommends replacement of equipment whenever necessary and evaluates new equipment for its durability and value. Makes recommendations as to the purchase of new equipment.
Develops and implements training procedures to ensure the safe operation of all groundskeeping equipment. Performs employee performance evaluations and assist with the preparation of the departmental annual budget.
Assigns subordinates to routine laboring and remodeling activies when groundskeeping activities have been completed. Performs light remodeling such as carpet replacement and painting.
Makes recommendations on the scheduling of lawn care treatments and purchasing of groundskeeping equipment and supplies within approved budget.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises 2 to 4 employees in the grounds maintenance. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; recommending the hiring, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), three years of responsible groundskeeping experience, one year of supervision and, preferably, courses in lawn care and grounds maintenance or a combination of education and training. Certification in Use of Hazardous and Noxious Chemicals is desired.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees, vendors and contractors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
