Champaign County Auditor
Welcome to the Champaign County Auditor’s Office website. This website is designed to allow citizen access to information collected by the Champaign County Auditor, as well as publicize the role and responsibilities of the elected Auditor.
In the menu to the left, I am pleased to offer Champaign County’s Online Checkbook. This government transparency tool will be updated each month following the Champaign County Board’s monthly meeting. Please feel free to direct questions concerning County vendor payments directly to me.
Additionally, please consider reviewing the Annual Financial Statements on file with my office. The Comprehensive Annual Report (CAFR) is a several hundred page document that details County finances and management’s approach to financial operations. The CAFR is often used by outside agencies, financial institutions and reviewing entities to determine the financial well-being of a government. The Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) does not attempt to replace the more in-depth CAFR, but instead supplements the CAFR so as to make information more readily accessible to a broader audience than that served by traditional financial reporting. Champaign County first created a PAFR for Champaign County’s Fiscal Year 2013.
The Auditor’s Office also issues Reports to the County Board on both a monthly and quarterly basis. I hope you will find those reports useful in understanding County Government as well.
It is an honor to serve you as County Auditor. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
Champaign County Auditor John Farney is a life-long resident of Champaign County. Raised in Homer and Philo, Farney is a graduate of Unity High School, Parkland Community College and Eastern Illinois University. John and his wife, Stephanie (Rosene), have one son, Nathaniel, and reside in rural Urbana.
John’s entire professional career has been dedicated to public service. As a community newspaper editor in Champaign County, John was tasked with keeping the public informed about their communities. Later, as an election official in the Champaign County Clerk’s Office, he worked tirelessly to ensure that elections were open, transparent and well run.
John was elected as Champaign County Auditor in 2012. During his tenure he has revamped the Auditor’s Office, authoring new reports, implemented current accounting principles, and enacted new programs designed to generate revenue for County Government. John has been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting and has received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting. These national awards are bestowed only on government officials who are committed to the highest standards in government and financial reporting. Champaign County is one of only 3 counties (of 102) to have an official recognized for both of these achievements.
John is active in the process as Champaign County begins implementing a modern accounting system to replace the current four decade old system. Replacement of this system will ensure high reporting standards in compliance with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and generally accepted accounting principles may be achieved.
In addition to his statutory duties, John was an active participant in the County’s effort to become Illinois Green Business Certified. He is also actively involved with the County’s Emergency Management Agency in disaster financial reporting. He also serves on the County’s Technology Oversight Committee and as a contract negotiator, representing General Unit elected officials in talks with AFSCME. John serves the Illinois Association of County Auditors as the registered Continuing Professional Education Sponsor.
He is also dedicated to his community and county, serving and being recognized in the following capacities:
- Vice President, Administration, Prairielands Council Boy Scouts of America
- Committee Chair, Holy Cross Pack 9 Cub Scouts
- Vice President, Holy Cross School Parent Teacher Club
- Parent Ambassador, Holy Cross School
- Member, VFW Post #630 Men’s Auxiliary
