September 27, 2010 (4:30 pm): Last day to pay with a personal check. Starting the next business day only money orders, cashiers check or cash will be accepted. This is according to State of Illinois law.

October 5, 2010 (12:00 pm): Cut-off for names to appear in the newspaper.

Anyone unpaid after 12:00 pm on October 5, 2010 will, by law, appear in their local newspaper. There will be No Exceptions and No Retractions.

The publication of names is a legal requirement of the State of Illinois and is intended as notification of unpaid taxes. The newspapers require 5 – 7 business days to prepare for publication of the delinquent list. The delinquent list must be published by October 18, 2010.

October 13, 2010 (8:00 am): By law, a $10 cost is added to the amount due on each parcel to cover the cost of the certified notices and the publication of names.

October 28, 2010 (8:30 am): Judgment will be taken in Courtroom D in the Courthouse in Urbana. This is a legal process of providing proof to a Judge that all of the legal requirements of notification have been performed according to the law. Once satisfied, the Judge then orders the unpaid taxes sold at the annual tax sale.

October 28, 2010 (4:30 pm): Last day to pay prior to the annual tax sale. Anything unpaid at 4:30 pm will be included in the annual tax sale.

October 29, 2010 (9:00 am): Annual Tax Sale in the Lyle Shields Meeting Room of the Brookens Administrative Center in Urbana. This is a legal process of selling taxes, not property.

As required by Illinois State Statute, taxes paid or postmarked after the due date must include interest at a rate of 1 ½ % per month. Interest is calculated by the month and not by the day. For the amount of interest on a late payment, look on the payment stub of your tax bill, the interest amount is figured for you.

Banks cannot collect late payments. All late payments must be made at the Collector’s Office.

The last day to pay with a personal check is September 27, 2010. Postmark will not be accepted. By law, only cashier’s checks, money orders or cash will be accepted September 28, 2010 through October 28, 2010 (30 days prior to the tax sale).

Final Delinquent Notices for unpaid 2009 taxes must be sent by certified mail no later than October 13, 2010. Publication of delinquent names will appear in local newspapers no later than October 18, 2010. The last day to pay prior to the Tax Sale will be October 28, 2010. Postmark will not be accepted. Payment must be received in our office by 4:30 pm October 28, 2010.
